WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) — Thompson Park hosted an elaborate fireworks display to honor Independence Day this Thursday, marking a unique event since last year’s fireworks event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A huge turnout enjoyed this annual tradition.

At dusk, the fireworks began, with this year’s display costing the city $10,000 – double its usual budget. They were set off to music provided by Orchestra of Northern New York while 7 News anchor Makenzie Piatt served as hostess.

Early attendees at the fireworks were treated to delicious meals and drinks from local restaurants like American Diner, Crust & Crumb Bakery Cafeteria, Covered Bridge Brew Haus, and Grasshoppers. Furthermore, free activities such as spin art, dunk tank dumpings, and petting zoo visits were available, and donations were accepted as well. The event was free to attend; donations would only be accepted upon leaving.

As well as fireworks, the parade included floats, firetrucks, and motorcycles; live music (including an appearance by George Birge); a beer garden on the north side of the town square; as well as plenty of activities designed to keep kids occupied and amused.

MetraPark provides an unforgettable Fourth of July fireworks show, free and open to the public. Parking spaces are available in both lower and upper lots.
